About this event
Tech is a powerful tool for inclusion and can be used to change the world for good, and several of the Bath Digital Festival talks will explore this. Our global appetite for tech is growing exponentially. But as demand grows, the environmental, social and economic impacts of tech grow too. The unexpected impacts include conflict minerals, slave labour, coal-fired data centres, contaminated dumps ... and a massive increase in carbon dioxide emissions. Most of us are hardly aware of this, but we all - individual citizens, businesses and techies - need visibility of the impact of tech itself, so that we can make better choices and influence industry to behave responsibly.
How much carbon dioxide does it take to manufacture a new mobile or tablet?
What's the environmental impact of using Netflix?
How much CO2 does it take to watch a cat video?
Which mobiles are the most ethical?
Dorothy and Michelle will answer these questions and more, and leave you with a positive message about what you can do to ensure tech is an empowering force for good across the world.
Collection point for old tech: Have old tech you need to dispose of securely (including the deletion of your personal data), whilst supporting a charity? Greengage and DONATE IT have a collection point at this talk, for you to drop off your old laptops, PCs and tablets.
