About this event
Steve Jobs once said (I paraphrase), that new ideas are merely a new combination of old concepts. Our ability to see connections between them - to join the disparate dots - is what fuels creativity. To be creative, we have to be curious.
We have to go beyond the confines of what we do and hunt out a diverse range of ideas, designs, words and images. To collect as many different dots, so that one day in the future connections are made and something new emerges.
This talk will offer an explanation of creativity and why we all have the potential to be creative. It will show you examples of where to go when you want to be inspired. How to borrow ideas, mix them up and make something new. It will include pearls of wisdom from advertising, comedy, science, fashion, music, photography and a nun.
As fashion designer, Paul Smith, said "Inspiration is everywhere. It could be taking photographs through a viewfinder, which teaches you to look. It could be finding inspiration in texture, such as a rough wall next to a shiny door, that could be Harris Tweed and silk. It could be a Matisse painting, a movie, often it's an artist. It’s all there if you want it."
Or, as the nuclear scientist, Ernest Rutherford, said: “... we have no money, we shall have to think.”
